Black Soldier Fly, the Earth Solution to our Trash Problems

You may have heard about worm composting, using composting earth worms to convert ordinary organic house waste into something useful. But despite the good work of the worms, it usually takes 2-3 months to complete. Let me introduce a good companion to the worms: Black Soldier Fly.

Black solider is an insect and the good thing about insects, they have extremely short lifetime cycle. In an ideal environment, it takes 3 days to hatch from eggs, 21 days to grow and 4 more days to pupae into the adult fly. Since they spend much of their life as larvae, they do not need to eat and feed to survive the last few days as adult flies. So they will not touch your food, nor transmit any diseases.

These little critters has a awesome appetite and usually devour their food in a flash. They are heat loving to 110+F. Summer is no problem but the extreme cold winter temperature can cause them to slow way down and stay dormant.
